The solution was to install Spellbreak through the Epic Games Launcher, create an account in-game, then uninstall from Epic Games and try again through Steam. I reached out to Spellbreak support, who told me this is an issue with the Spellbreak in-game account authentication. None of these additional steps had any effect on the scenarios outlined above.
