Clearly, these stories were injected into Singapore’s version of wayang kulit to attract all ages and races. What makes it more fascinating about Sri Warisan was the way how they incorporated a variety of stories from old Hindu tales to new superhero themes. With the support from the state-run arts funding agencies, Sri Warisan managed to capture the hearts of the society by introducing wayang kulit performances back to the HDB heartlanders. At the same time, the number of dalangs in Singapore was reduced tremendously once they passed on, and it reached to a point where there were no ready replacements from their younger generations.Īfter a period of absence from the cultural scenes, wayang kulit came back to life with the formation of a local art group known as Sri Warisan. Singapore approached an era of modernisation. The decline of wayang kulit could be attributed to a combination of reasons due to new interest and developments within the society. However, after years of popularity in Singapore, wayang kulit went through a period of decline. Wayang kulit lived through the glory years with performances ranging from a village entertainment to official colonial events. Wayang kulit remained popular even during the British colonial period and was patronised by both the British and the locals. It became part of the Malay culture and remained prevalent for a long time. Not surprisingly, wayang kulit was brought to Singapore by the Javanese migrants in early 19th century. In the following main chapters, a comparison with traditional wayang kulit were made from time to time to identify how wayang kulit adapted and reinvented. The research provided a wide range of information such as the basic features of wayang kulit, the role of a dalang or puppeteer, and the ancient Hindu stories that were told in wayang kulit performances. In order to gain a fuller understanding and interpretation of traditional wayang kulit, a comprehensive coverage and research were carried out on how wayang kulit was performed in Java and Malaysia. The earliest documented wayang kulit performance was in the 10th century. Before the commencement of this extensive study of wayang kulit in Singapore, it is important to look back into the past to understand how wayang kulit was brought about in Southeast Asia. This Academic Exercise attempts to examine the developments of wayang kulit in Singapore from the colonial period in early 19th century till the present day.
